Preventing Falls

The National Council for Aging Care notes, “Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall.” Falling can be and is a very real hazard for many, the older population in specific. Most falls happen right in the comfort of your very own home.

Here are some tips on how to help prevent these falls:

1. Lose the Clutter and Clean any spills as they occur
2. Make sure you have good lighting (i.e. Ceiling lights, lamps, nightlights)
3. Secure any Area Rugs you may have
4. Always keep walkways clear of toys or objects
5. Keep Furniture arranged to create clear walkways, too
6. Install and use handrails in the Bathrooms and Stairways
7. Wear Shoes over slippery socks
8. Avoid wearing clothing that is loose and baggy
9. Use Your assistive devices properly
10. Get your Annual Physical Examination to make sure you are in “Tip-top Shape”
11. Make sure you are properly eating and fueling your body
12. Visit Advanced Physical Therapy for balance and gait training! #wetreatthat
